Squads
Learn to Swim
GNSC use the ASA  National Plan for Teaching Swimming of which there are 7 stages each swimmer needs to
achieve before progressing into the squads. Once a swimmer has completed a level, they will be awarded a
badge and certificate for that completed stage. On Saturday mornings there are 3 sessions for non swimmers
and beginners in the teaching pool, swimmers can join from 4yrs of age. Once completed, swimmers progress
to swimming on Mondays and Fridays. Stroke work and deep water activities will be done in the diving pit
periodically in these sessions.

When a swimmer is progressing through these stages they are able to attend an additional session on Sunday
evening to learn starts, turns and finishes (competitive start award). To complete the competitive start award,
they need to perform a competitive start from the blocks into shallow end on each stroke. This start needs to
be streamlined and show all the underwater work required for that stroke, and is essential before progressing to
the competitive squads

Rookie
Rookie squad is the transition from learn to swim into the club squads, with more pool time to help develop
stamina, strength and stroke skills in preparation for a move to Bronze squad.

Bronze, Silver & Gold Squads
These squads swim from 2 to 5 times each week. Pool time in increased as you move up through the squads
via longer sessions and more swimming days as you progress. Gold squad members will also have 2 land
conditioning session per week. Swimmers in these squads will be given the opportunity to swim in League
galas for GNSC and in Open galas.

Age group 1, Age Group 2 & Youth Squad
These are the top squads and sessions are taken by the head coach. These sessions are geared towards
getting the swimmers in best possible condition for any competitions. All swimmers in these squads will be
competing at swimming galas.

Club Squad
This squad is for swimmers who do not want to compete regularly but enjoy swimming within a club environment
to maintain and improve their swimming and fitness.

Masters Squad
The master’s squad is for swimmers over 25 yrs, there is an option for masters to compete in Masters Galas, or
just to maintain and improve their swimming and fitness. GNSC masters have had some excellent swimmers in the
past, notably, world record holder Maud Povey, British record holder Geoff Graves and National swimmer Anne
Hatherley
